Ecological Sacrifice Zones
Industrial swine production has taken over many parts of the country and increasingly other parts of the world, from Romania and Poland, to Mexico and China. The resulting degradation of air and water quality due to high concentrations of animals and waste ignites justifiable outrage in local communities. Each windowless barn is designed to confine at least 1,100 hogs, while the adjacent deep-pit “lagoons” hold liquefied manure that must be sprayed onto the surrounding fields and countryside to make room for the never-ending streams of waste.
